<p>Today, there are a few varieties of the diet floating around, but the basic menu consists of three meals a day—all of which include either ½ grapefruit,  8 U.S. ounces (8.33 U.K. ounces) of unsweetened grapefruit juice, or grapefruit pills or capsules—and an after-dinner snack of skim milk or tomato juice.  It is by no means a low-fat diet.  A typical breakfast can consist of two eggs with a couple of slices of bacon, along with the grapefruit.  You can dump half a bottle of salad dressing on your noontime salad if you like, and the quantity of meat allowed on this diet is also unlimited.   Go ahead and fry it up if you wish; there’s no restriction. </p>
<p>This diet may well have been the predecessor of the low-carb diets that have gained such popularity in recent years.  Like the cabbage diet, it promises substantial weight loss to those who can manage to endure its rigid guidelines for the required time frame, which is twelve days for grapefruit diet.  And like the cabbage diet, the weight loss will occur because it, too, is a severely calorie-restricted plan.  The dieter will be consuming less than 1,000 calories a day with most of this diet’s versions—again, not enough to nourish the body—and will gain the weight (water) back soon after the diet ends. </p>
<p>Beyond that, grapefruit juice may react adversely with some common medications, including high cholesterol medications, birth control pills, and antihistamines.  All this is not to discount the fact that the grapefruit itself is a healthy, nutrient-dense, high-fiber food.  It just doesn’t have the mysterious, fat-burning power that the grapefruit diet advocates would have you believe.</p>

<p>The Maple Syrup Diet, sometimes called the Lemonade Diet because of the diet drink’s other main ingredient, returned to the spotlight recently when singer/actress Beyonce Knowles revealed using this method to drop one and a half stone&#8211; about twenty pounds in U.S. terms&#8211; in a week and a half for the movie, Dreamgirls.  (Ms. Knowles does not recommend others try it.)  The plan revolves around a drink concoction that is made from equal parts of lemon juice and pure maple syrup mixed with water (1 part acid-sugar mixture to 12 parts water), and a bit of cayenne pepper to taste.  </p>
<p>Consume six to ten glasses of this—no other sustenance allowed—daily for ten days.  Advocates of the regime say the detoxification can be enhanced by downing a sea salt/water mixture before the maple lemonade drink each morning and drinking a cup of herbal tea—one containing senna with laxative qualities—each night.  Sounds yummy, huh?  Not surprisingly, those who have tried it report abdominal cramping, diarrhea, sore throat, swollen glands, a strange coating on the tongue, irritability, and extreme hunger, among other symptoms.  Go figure.  Like Beyonce, you will lose weight.  Even if you are able to force down nine glasses of the super sweet lemonade, your daily caloric intake will be a bit less than 500.  You are getting virtually none of the vitamins and minerals your body needs, and if you opt out of the nightly tea laxative, you may have problems with constipation since your body isn’t getting any fiber, either. </p>
<p>Headaches may become fewer and you may have less acne as some who have used this or some other detox plan claim, but medical experts say this is likely due to the fact that you have eliminated caffeine and alcohol from your diet and are hydrating your body more.  In fact, there is no need to put yourself in such misery to detoxify your body.  Your body has its own detox systems in place.  They are known as the liver and the kidneys.   You can even boost the effectiveness of your own natural systems by drinking more water and eating more fruits and vegetables.  Bet you’ve heard that before.</p>

<p>Although there are variations on the recipe, the soup itself is made by cooking up a mixture of cabbage, celery, carrots, peppers, green onions, and tomatoes, with onion soup mix and bouillon cubes thrown in for flavor.  The diet plan promoters promise you a substantial decrease in weight—10 to 15 pounds, or 0.75 to a full stone&#8211; if you follow the plan for a week.</p>
<p>After a week, they recommend you wait awhile and then complete the 7-day program again to lose more weight.  The problem is that you will probably have regained most, if not all, the weight you lost when you completed the program the first time since you will have lost mostly water weight and not actual fat.  The number on the scale will drop in the 7-day period as promised&#8211;if you can stand to eat what some who have tried it call a very bland-tasting concoction for the entire period.  You would expect to lose weight on any diet that is as severely calorie-restricted as this one. </p>
<p>Under the guidelines of the diet plan, the dieter will be consuming under the 1200-calorie a day recommended minimum and may end up eating even fewer calories due to boredom with the food choices.  As with any extremely low calorie diet, you’re unlikely to get the daily nutrients your body requires.  And don’t make any dinner plans while you’re on this diet.  You’ll not find cabbage soup on a restaurant menu—at least not this fat-free version.  You may want to limit your public presence while on this diet anyway.  Cabbage consumption, especially in such large quantities, causes flatulence.</p>

These same foods also block out the burning of fat cells as the body will use the sugars in these foods to burn energy first, thereby not allowing you to burn any fat and lose any weight.</p>
<p>The GI diet will help you focus on low GI foods.  These types of foods will leave you feeling less hungry and will assist you in controlling you cravings.  People who have tried the GI diet report feeling a lessened or no need to snack or over-stuff themselves at meal time, so you will consume fewer calories in a day.</p>
<p><strong>What can I eat on the GI Diet?</strong></p>
<p>Here’s the good news:  you can eat absolutely anything on the GI diet.  Even the predecessor to the GI diet, the “Montignac diet”, allows for anyone to eat what ever they would like. Again, it&#8217;s all about focusing on a balance between high GI foods and low GI foods.  A list of some low, moderate, and high GI foods are below:</p>
<p><strong>Low GI:</strong>  Pasta, grain breads, beans, milk, most vegetables (excluding potatoes) and most fruits (excluding watermelon)</p>
<p><strong>Moderate GI:</strong>  Basmati rice, sweet potatoes, whole wheat breads and pastas, table sugar</p>
<p><strong>High GI:</strong>  Baked potatoes, white bread, watermelon, corn flakes, white rise (such as jasmine rice), croissants</p>
<p>The GI diet is about eating foods with lower sugar levels, so you will be reducing the amount of sugary treats, processed foods, fatty foods, and carbohydrates from your diet.</p>
<p><strong>NOTE:</strong>  <em>If you decide to use the Montignac diet, you will be following a “phase” system to try and help you lose weight.  Phase 1 involves the losing of the weight, whereas Phase 2 will help you both stabilize your weight and prevent weight gain.</em></p>
<p><strong>How does the GI Diet Work?</strong></p>
<p>Numerous studies have shown that those who eat more foods with high GI carbohydrate content are more often obese or over weight.  By reducing these foods you not only help your body shed the weight by cutting the calories, but you are also restoring it to its healthiest state by eating healthier foods.  Consuming foods that give you a steady source of energy also help you when exercising to lose weight.</p>
<p><strong>How can I start my GI Diet?</strong></p>
<p>Start by focusing on replacing one meal a day with a low GI meal.  Below are two easy low GI recipes that I still enjoy today:</p>
<p><strong>Tangy Lemon Chicken with Parsley<br />
3 Servings</strong></p>
<p><strong>You need:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>3 medium breasts of chicken</li>
<li>Half of a lemon</li>
<li>1 handful of fresh parsley (chopped)</li>
<li>3 garlic cloves</li>
<li>1 Tbsp. of olive oil</li>
<li>½ tsp. salt</li>
<li>Fresh ground pepper</li>
<li>Cocktail sticks</li>
</ul>
<p>(1) Remove the lemon peel and dice up the flesh into small pieces.  Slice the garlic cloves and mix the garlic with the chopped parsley, lemon, salt and pepper<br />
(2) Slice the chicken breasts length ways so that you are creating a small pocket (take care not to slice all of the way through or cut yourself)<br />
(3) Open up the pocket and stuff each one of the breasts with the lemon mix.  Seal the pocket with a cocktail stick.<br />
(4) Take the chicken breasts and place them in an oven-approved dish. Cover the dish with foil and cook for 30 minutes at 380*F (or 190*C or Gas mark 5). Remove the foil and cook the breasts for an additional 5 minutes so that the breasts become browned.  Serve with a vegetable side dish. </p>
<p><strong>Grilled Salmon with Olive and Dill<br />
3 Servings</strong></p>
<p><strong>You will need</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li>3 medium salmon fillets</li>
<li>1 lemon</li>
<li>2 tsp. of chopped (or dried) dill</li>
<li>1 cup of olives (or 200g of black olives)</li>
<li>1 handful of fresh parsley</li>
<li>1 ¼ cup of natural yogurt (or 300g)</li>
<li>Salt</li>
</ul>
<p>(1) Take a grill-proof tray and line with foil.  Place the salmon fillets in the tray.  After cutting the lemon, squeeze half the juice over the salmon and then sprinkle with half of the dill.  Place the salmon under a medium heat grill for 4 minutes and then remove, taking care to turn over and then coat the other side of the salmon with the remaining lemon juice and dill.  Again cook under the medium grill for 4 minutes.<br />
(2) While waiting for the salmon to cook, chop up the olives and the parsley.  Add the olives and parsley to the natural yogurt and add a pinch of salt.  Serve alongside the grilled salmon.</p>
